This is it. We are down to our last week here in Brazil. In seven days we will be fighting through the airport trying to get back home. The time I have spent here has been wonderful. Even though it has not been always easy and smooth sailing, I think that God made this all worth while. Yesterday was probably our last trip to Mercado Modelo and the down town area. We also went to the lighthouse in Barra to watch the sunset with Travis, Alicia and Ceara. After that we all went out to eat together. Paul, Brooke, and Josh (our fellow interns from São Paulo that came to visit) went back this morning around 7. Last week the fuse box at the church blew up, yes fire and all. No one was hurt and the only major damage was blown fuses, power strips and the result was the loss of all electrical power to the building. We had church in the dark with paper fans the kids made for people. There were two flashlights that were used to find the way to the bathroom. We hold studies in the entry way and melt if we are there too long. It was too dark to finish painting the mural and too dark to spackle the youth room like we needed to. There is also no air moving at all and thus no ventilation. Today is our last VBS day and we should have as many kids as we did last time. We are trying to think of how we are going to accommodate all the kids in the building with no lights, no air, no electricity for popcorn, and no cold water. Heather and I are also going up there early. We are determined to finish the mural like we promised. So what lights up a dark room? Yep, candles and book lights. I hope that our idea will work.
I really cannot believe that we have seven days. This Sunday is our last. Maybe we will have electricity again. (crosses fingers) This Sunday is also the kids program that Heather has been planning. It will be a chance for the kids to show that church what they have been doing in VBS. Please pray that this will bring some of the kids’ family to church. It is going to be so hard to say goodbye to everyone. But I think a fun program and a potluck lunch will be a good way to start. Please be praying that we are able to finish up all that we need to in these last seven days.
